Partners in Education Summer Institutes Workshop
Partners
in Education Program (PiE) supports the development of citizenship
education, and partnerships among teachers from Eurasian schools
and training institutes by sponsoring a training program in the
content and methods of teaching civics, and in the development
and evaluation of curricula in citizenship education. Social
studies educators, administrators, and teacher trainers from
schools in participating countries and regions will be selected
to participate in a ten-day workshop in each country civics education
content and methods, curriculum development and evaluation.
The “Summer Institutes” will be organized
by teachers and teacher trainers who participated in the fall 2003
Partners in
Education citizenship education internship in the United States.
In addition, an educational consultant and one or two teachers
of citizenship education from the United States will participate
in
the training. The workshop will include both content and methods
that have been developed both during and after the US internship.
The workshops will take place during the month of June-July, 2003.
The exact date and location of the workshop will be determined
by workshop organizers once workshop participants have been selected.
What is Citizenship Education?
The goal of citizenship education is to teach students the knowledge
and skills necessary to actively participate in government and society.
Recruitment for the 2004 PiE citizenship education workshop will
be limited to educational professionals from the following regions
of Ukraine: Donetsk, Kharkiv, Luhansk, Poltava, Sumy, Chernihiv,
Kyiv, Rivne, Volyn, Zhytomyr.
Once you are certain that you meet the eligibility requirements
listed below, you must complete and submit the attached
application to the nearest American Councils office no
later than December 12, 2003.
Eligibility requirements:
- Citizen of Ukraine and resident of a participating region
- Have graduated from a university, or pedagogical institute
or a pedagogical university.
- Presently employed as one of the following: a teacher
or administrator in an accredited secondary school (grades
5- 12) or other educational facility which has students
in grades 5-12; a professor or instructor at an institute
involved in teacher training; any other employed educational
professional actively involved in citizenship education.
- Must be a teacher or teacher trainer in social studies
courses such as history, sociology, geography, psychology,
economics, law, etc.
- A minimum of two years teaching or administrative experience
is required.
- Intend to continue teaching or administering in a school,
institute, or specialized center in the same region for
two years AFTER participation in the training in June 2004.
It is not necessary that applicants
to the Summer Institutes speak or understand English, though educators
who know English are welcome to apply.
The Application:
The Application package consists of two sections: Biographical questions and
essay questions. When answering the essay questions, it is important to provide
as much detail as possible and concrete examples.
To participate in the PiE Citizenship Education Workshop, please submit the
following:
- One application with original signatures, Pages 1-4, completed in your native
language.
- Three copies of all materials submitted, including
letters of reference and any additional materials.

These documents should be submitted to the nearest American Councils
office – by mail or in person-- no later than the deadline for
your region. Applications will not be accepted by fax or email.
Selection Process:
Your application will be read by a nominating committee made up of
five to six education specialists from your country. A list the names
of selected workshop participants will be forwarded to the capital
city office of American Councils, and to the US Embassy. |
